I am Tongan, my husband is Samoan. We absolutely love our cultures and the beauty that is found within them. I can understand most of what is being said in Tongan, but I need to work on speaking Tongan. The kids know a few words in Tongan and Samoan. The languages are similar. Most fluent speaking Tongans can understand Samoan and fluent speaking Samoans can understand Tongan.
Polynesians are blessed with cultures that are rich in traditions. Both of our cultures encourage selflessness, love, and family being the center of life. We are definitely learning to embrace our Polynesian heritage. One of the best ways to strengthen & embrace our heritage is by learning the languages of our ancestors. I am absolutely excited about this new website that I found out about on Facebook. It's called Speak Tongan.
Speak Tongan is a fantastic site that is easy to use and features audio lessons. It's a beginners guide to speaking Tongan. Be sure to check out the Speak Tongan Terms section of the site. You can listen to the audio on the site for free, but downloads of the audio cost $5-$10. (Very budget-friendly!)
I hope the administrators and creators come up with a Samoan version of the site too. I know that learning to speak our Polynesian languages will bless our lives and the lives of anyone who wants to enrich their understanding of culture and Polynesian languages.
