Seventh Generation Optical Brightener- Giveaway!-CLOSED

Congrats to Janice! You won the prize pack!

As a mom, you already do so much to protect your family- buckling seatbelts, cooking healthy meals and requiring bike helmets. But did you know that the laundry detergent you may be using could contain little-known chemicals called optical brighteners?

According to scientific research, these can cause allergic reactions, are toxic to small fish and other aquatic life, and can pollute your waterways.

When ultraviolet light hits optical brighteners coating your clothing, the brighteners convert UV rays into visible light to create an optical illusion. This tricks the eye into thinking the clothing is whiter and brighter, and therefore cleaner than it really is.

So how can you avoid these optical brighteners? Seventh Generation makes it easy because their laundry detergents are not only free of optical brighteners, but they’re also non-toxic . In addition, because Seventh Generation liquid laundry detergents are both hypo-allergenic and biodegradable, you can rest easy knowing you made a considerate choice for your family and the environment.

When washed in a conventional laundry detergent that contains optical brighteners, clothes appear to glow under a black light. When you use Seventh Generation liquid laundry products, you won’t see the same glow on your clothing.

Take a look at this experiment in the photo below. We took two identical organic cotton shirts and washed one in a conventional laundry detergent that contains optical brighteners and the other in Seventh Generation laundry detergent which does not use optical brighteners.
Shocking, isn't it?

Our Review:

A few of our kids have had mild eczema. It has since gone away, but one of the recommendations that our pediatrician gave us, was to use unscented and mild soaps and detergent. Especially for the babies clothing. I have heard great things about Seventh Generation Products but I didn't realize how fantastic they were until I received my set of Laundry Detergent, Fabric Softener and Dryer Sheets. I especially love how eco-friendly the products and packaging is. I definitely like the results I had with Seventh Generation Products. I must say though, I really do like having my scented laundry products. I received a Seventh Generation Prize Pack from Seventh Generation through My Blog Spark.

The Giveaway:

One of my lucky readers will win their very own Seventh Generation Laundry Products.

Our thoughts:

There's nothing we love more than a freshly made pie. With a large family, although it's not hard, it can be a bit time consuming to make a fresh pie crust. We decided to make two delicious Pumpkin Pies. The Pillsbury Pie Crust made my dessert for that day so simple to make and tasty to eat. I often use Pillsbury Refrigerated Pie Crusts for Pot Pies when I don't have much time. I love the convenience and homemade quality.

Cheerios Spoonfuls of Stories Giveaway! CLOSED!

To help grow kids’ love of reading at a young age, Cheerios® is once again inviting families to start the day with a nutritious breakfast and a new book. As part of its ongoing commitment to nurturing young bodies and minds and helping families connect by fostering a shared love of reading, Cheerios will provide more than six million children’s books, free inside Cheerios boxes, through its Spoonfuls of Stories® program. Over the past nine years, Cheerios has distributed almost 50 million children’s books in-pack.

This year’s free in-pack book offerings, appropriate for children ages three to eight and written in both English and Spanish, include:
  • All the World, by Liz Garton Scanlon and illustrated by Marla Frazee, which discusses the many wonderful things a child can encounter in the world as well as the commonalities all the world shares.

  • Chaucer’s First Winter, by Stephen Krensky and illustrated by Henry Cole, follows a bear named Chaucer, who knows he is supposed to sleep through the winter but feels it’s much more fun to stay up and play.

  • Jump!, by Scott M. Fischer, chronicles the adventures of a bug, a frog, a cat, a hound, a crocodile, a shark, and a whale, who all love to jump!

  • No T. Rex in the Library, by Toni Buzzeo and illustrated by Sachiko Yoshikawa, is a story about a little girl named Tess and her adventures in the library with a boisterous T-Rex.

  • The Purple Kangaroo, by comedian Michael Ian Black and illustrated by Peter Brown, which is a vivid and humor-filled story that tricks the reader into thinking about a purple kangaroo.
As studies have consistently shown, children with greater access to books and other print materials are more successful in school and in life. However, one recent study revealed that in low-income neighborhoods, there is only about one age-appropriate book for every 300 children,* a statistic that exposes one of the biggest barriers affecting literacy today – lack of access to books. In an effort to help combat this issue, Cheerios, as part of its Spoonfuls of Stories initiative, will also make a $300,000 financial donation to First Book, an award-winning national nonprofit that helps get books into the hands of children in need. Cheerios has donated more than $3.5 million to First Book over the past nine years.

To learn more about the Spoonfuls of Stories program or to donate to First Book, visit

We definitely call ourselves a cereal family.  One of our favorites happens to be Cheerios. The kids love that Cheerios are yummy and fun to eat. I love them not only because they are  tasty, but I love that Cheerios make a quick and easy snack.  Cheerios is helping to  encourage healthy eating while at the same time they are influencing children to enjoy reading with their Spoonfuls of Stories Program. My kids love the books that come inside of their cereal boxes. It's exciting even for me as a mom to buy them Cheerios and let them discover a new book inside of the box.

To facilitate this review, we received a $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble, all five of the new in-pack titles and a box of Cheerios through MyBlogSpark from Cheerios. Thank you Cheerios and MyBlogSpark.
